What to Write When You Don’t Know What to Write

I’ve gone through periods of prolonged procrastination. During these times, I feel unmotivated to write or just don’t know what to write. On those days, everything I write sounds incoherent and stupid. It just happens.

There’s going to be a time when you get writer’s block too. The greatest writers of all time have gone through it. But, not to fear, you can prepare yourself ahead of time for those times when you can’t figure out what the hell to write. Here are some things you can write when you really don’t know what to write.

  1. Write a journal entry. This is obvious. If you’re an emotional writer, use journaling to get in touch with yourself. Jot down how you feel at the moment, what is holding you back from writing, or your writing goals.
  2. Scan the internet or the app store for writing prompts. Technology is your best friend when you have writer’s block. Use your phone or computer to find some prompts. Maybe try prompts from different genres than what you normally write. If you like nonfiction, find some fiction prompts and vice versa.
  3. Write a research paper. I know this sounds super boring. You’re not a college student anymore, but it can be cool to get into some research about a topic. You never know what will inspire…
